Bulldog Anesthesia: Questions to Ask Before Surgery

A practical list of questions Bulldog and French Bulldog owners can ask before any procedure that requires anesthesia.

Anesthesia for brachycephalic breeds can require additional planning before, during, and after the procedure. Asking informed questions can help you and your veterinary team align on expectations.

Before the day of surgery

  • Has my dog had a recent physical exam and bloodwork interpreted with brachycephalic risks in mind?
  • Are there pre-medications or weight-management goals that may be appropriate before this procedure?
  • Is fasting timing different for a brachycephalic dog with regurgitation history?

Induction, monitoring and airway

  • Who will be monitoring my dog during anesthesia, and what parameters are tracked?
  • How is intubation planned given my dog's anatomy?
  • What recovery position and oxygen support will be used after extubation?

Recovery

  • What signs at home warrant a call back to the clinic?
  • How will pain control be managed, and what are realistic activity restrictions?
  • When is the recheck, and what should I bring?

Outcomes depend on anatomy, age, weight, severity, diagnostics and anesthetic risk. Plans are individualized after examination.

When to contact a veterinarian sooner

Call a veterinarian promptly if your dog develops breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, collapse, or unusual sedation after any procedure.

What to bring to a consultation

  • Records from your primary veterinarian, including prior diagnoses and medications
  • Recent lab work, imaging, or referral reports when available
  • Short phone videos of breathing, sleep, eye changes, vomiting, or regurgitation if relevant
  • A timeline of when signs started, what makes them worse, and what you have already tried
