Entropion is inward rolling of the eyelid so that hair contacts the cornea with every blink. In Bulldogs and French Bulldogs it is often related to facial conformation rather than a single injury. Some dogs cope quietly for a while; others develop painful corneal disease quickly.

The clinical picture, and what it is mistaken for
In entropion, part or all of an eyelid margin turns inward. Lashes or facial hair then rub the conjunctiva and cornea, which can cause irritation, pigmentation, scarring, or ulceration over time.
Entropion is different from cherry eye (gland prolapse) and from simple tear staining. Dogs can have more than one condition. Photographs rarely show the full eyelid dynamics a veterinarian needs to see in person.
Signs to watch for
- Persistent squinting in one or both eyes
- Tearing or brown tear staining
- Pawing or rubbing the face on furniture
- An eye that looks partly closed in photos
- A cloudy spot on the cornea or a lid rim pressed inward against the eye
How veterinarians may evaluate the eyelids
Evaluation usually includes watching the blink, checking both eyelids, staining the cornea when ulceration is possible, and assessing tear film and nasal folds. The veterinarian also considers whether pain-related spasm is exaggerating the roll (spastic entropion) versus a primarily conformational problem.
Temporary tacking versus definitive correction
In a growing puppy with mild rolling, temporary tacking sutures may protect the cornea while the face matures. Established entropion in adults usually requires surgical correction when hair continues to contact the eye. The surgical goal is careful, conservative correction — removing too much skin can pull the lid outward and create different problems.
Whether temporary or definitive options are appropriate depends on age, severity, corneal health, and overall anesthetic risk. Individual results vary.

Eye procedures still require anesthesia planning that respects brachycephalic airway anatomy. Ask the same preparation questions you would before any Bulldog surgery, including monitoring and recovery support.
When to seek care sooner
If your dog is squinting, tearing heavily, or avoiding light, schedule an exam rather than waiting. Acute pain, sudden cloudiness, or a change in globe position warrants urgent care.
