Entropion in Bulldogs: Signs and Treatment Options

How to recognize inward-rolling eyelids in Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, what an exam looks for, and when surgical correction may be appropriate.
Entropion is inward rolling of the eyelid so that hair contacts the cornea every blink. In bulldogs and French bulldogs it is usually driven by facial conformation rather than injury. Some dogs cope quietly for a while; others develop ulcers quickly. The squinting bulldog is not always a stoic bulldog — it is sometimes a bulldog with a sore eye.

Signs to watch for
- Persistent squinting in one or both eyes
- Tearing or brown tear staining
- Pawing or rubbing the face on furniture
- An eye that looks partly closed in photos
- Cloudy spot on the cornea or a pink rim of the lid pressed inward
What treatment may involve
In a growing puppy with mild rolling, temporary tacking sutures may protect the cornea until the face matures. In adults, a definitive eyelid procedure is usually the appropriate option. The goal is conservative correction — removing too much skin can pull the lid outward and create different problems.
Anesthesia for a brachycephalic dog is planned around airway, weight and recovery. Outcomes depend on anatomy, age, weight, severity, diagnostics and anesthetic risk.
